Encompassing a wide range of expertise from automotive to communications to aerospace, the South West is a hub of advanced engineering activity. The West of England area has become a focus for aerospace engineering organisations and now boasts 9 major UK aerospace companies with a strategic presence supported by a supply chain of over 700 companies employing around 18,000 people.
Well-known companies with a presence in the West of England include Airbus UK, Rolls Royce, QinetiQ and Thales and there is a range of support industries and companies in a variety of specialisms and sizes. In addition, the industry benefits from close links to the university sector with 4 local universities offering world-class research which is directly supporting innovation, and teaching which contributes to the employment base though providing graduates from a range of accredited courses and on-going continuous professional development.
